Risk Factors

Several factors can increase your risk of developing type 2 diabetes. The good news is type 2 diabetes can be delayed or prevented to a great extent because although some risk factors are inherited, many are preventable with lifestyle modifications.   The first step to prevention is knowing what the risk factors are. They include:

  •   Being overweight or obese
  •   Family history of diabetes
  •   Unhealthy diet
  •   Ethnic background
  •   Physically inactive and sedentary lifestyle
  •   Advancing age, usually above 40 years
  •   High blood pressure
  •   History of Gestational diabetes
  •   Pre-diabetes (Impaired glucose tolerance (IGT) is a category of higher than normal blood glucose but below the threshold for diagnosing diabetes)
