Several factors can increase your risk of developing type 2 diabetes. The good news is type 2 diabetes can be delayed or prevented to a great extent because although some risk factors are inherited, many are preventable with lifestyle modifications. The first step to prevention is knowing what the risk factors are. They include:
- Being overweight or obese
- Family history of diabetes
- Unhealthy diet
- Ethnic background
- Physically inactive and sedentary lifestyle
- Advancing age, usually above 40 years
- High blood pressure
- History of Gestational diabetes
- Pre-diabetes (Impaired glucose tolerance (IGT) is a category of higher than normal blood glucose but below the threshold for diagnosing diabetes)
