Diabetes is a word that is often feared by many people. This fear stems from the fact that diabetes treatment usually needs to be administered for prolonged periods not to mention the series of complications that could result from poor management of the condition. But, diabetes can be managed and the complications can be minimized with proper control. For the successful management of diabetes, the awareness of and early detection of the symptoms is necessary.

Unfortunately, many diabetics realise that they have the condition after a variety of complications have already occurred. Some of those complications include impaired vision and kidney failure.

Let’s get to know diabetes.
Diabetes occurs when the body loses its ability to regulate glucose in the blood. Why is blood sugar regulation so important? Glucose is used by every cell in the body as an energy source for the cells to work. The regulation of blood sugar in the body is carried out by Insulin is a hormone produced in the pancreas. This hormone is used to ensure that each cell gets enough glucose for them to function properly. Human cells will convert sugar into energy and will store the excess sugar in the liver. Thanks to insulin, blood sugar levels in your body can remain stable.
However, if:

  • Insulin is not produced or
  • Enough insulin is not produced or
  • The insulin that is produced does not work properly

The regulation of glucose in the blood fails, glucose levels build up and diabetes occurs. Treating diabetes immediately can prevent complications such as eye disease and kidney failure.
