If you are overweight, every kilogram you lose could reduce your risk considerably. You can check if you should lose weight by measuring your waist circumference.
- Measure your waist without pulling your stomach in.
- Find the bottom of your ribs and the top of your hips and measure at a point midway between these (about the level of your navel).
Normal waist circumference Women: Less than 80 cm (32 inches)
Normal waist circumference Men: Less than 90 cm (36 inches)
If your waist measurement is more than the figures above, you should consider losing weight. The best way to do so is to be physically active (60 minutes daily) and to control your meal portion size. Lose weight gradually as ‘quick fix’ diets that promise rapid weight loss are often unhealthy and difficult to maintain.
